Hospital Run For Charity
Hospital staff and their families from the Townsville Hospital Stroke Unit have signed up to the McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival to raise not only money for charity, but also awareness for healthy living.
Occupational Therapist Ian Meade and Dr Sally Meade and their two children Charlotte, 13 and Oliver, 17 have all signed up to compete in the Running Festival after being prompted to by Charlotte who had begun running with a local squad.
“My 13 year old has prompted us to become more active,” said Mr Meade. “We run every Saturday morning now and sometimes do a parkrun to prepare.”
“And through that we actually got some of our colleagues at work to sign up and run with us. There’s about 20 of us at the moment who work at the stroke unit at the Townsville Hospital who are all going to run.”
The staff at the Stroke Unit took up the call and began signing up to compete in the Festival and hopefully raise some money for their charity and potentially, new equipment for the unit.
“It’ll be a potential to raise a little fundraising for the Stroke Foundation Australia and for our stroke unit at the hospital. The Stroke Foundation are a wonderful organisation that provides support for people that have suffered a stroke and their families.”
The Unit have plans to create a race shirt for everyone running so they can promote their charity and team on the day.
“We’ll have everyone doing their bit, whatever they can do – from walking all the way up to the half marathon. It’s a way to get everyone active and living a healthy lifestyle.”
According to the Stroke Foundation Australia 1 in 6 people will suffer from a stroke, with the risk increasing in those who have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are overweight or obese, or have poor diet and exercise.
The Foundation aims to lower that statistic by providing prevention and awareness programs, research and treatments as well as support for those who have suffered.
“We’re trying to promote a healthy lifestyle, to go out and get regular exercise. The Townsville Running Festival is a great way to get involved with this,” said Mr Meade.
