Cairns Students Giving Townsville a Run for its Money
Students from the James Cook University Cairns Campus are traveling to Townsville in August to run in the McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival.
The JCU Cairns Run Club has about 100 members from the University who gather to train 3 times a week on campus. In August the club will bring between 20-25 of its members down to Townsville to compete in the annual McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival.
Nicole Perry, 31, is a coach in the Run Club and will be one of the members making the trip.
“ The Cairns JCU Run Club is a social run club that’s on campus here,” she says. “We’ve got about 100 members all up but I think we’ll have maybe 20-25 coming down to the event.”
“We’ve got a diverse range of different abilities and levels in the club, there are some who run to keep fit over the semester and keep social with others at the university,” she says. “and some are on a higher level and who compete, like I myself run nationally.”
The Run Club will be turning the weekend into a road trip and will be making the drive down the coast together.
“We are all bringing a bus down and we’ll stay on the Saturday night and race on Sunday.”
Ms. Perry says that many of the club are looking forward to trying to beat their personal bests on the race weekend and are training hard to be ready.
Ms. Perry and the rest of the JCU club are looking forward to returning to the Festival for a weekend of running and fun.
“We came, not last year but the year before. We really like it, we stayed in the backpackers at Rambutan, which was really fun. And the course itself is great and really fast.”
The 2017 McDonald’s Townsville Running Festival will be held on Sunday, 6 August. For more information, and to register, go to www.townsvillerunningfestival.com
